These Philantropic Organizations Are Making a Difference

The modern concept of philanthropy began in 18th Century Europe. It is a form of altruism in which individuals or organizations donate and raise money for the public good. This practice was continued in the fledgling United States by Benjamin Franklin who instituted a library, street lights, a hospital, a police force, and a fire department in his home city of Philadelphia. He also promoted science through the Philadelphia Academy which became the University of Pennsylvania. Franklin’s work inspired wealthy 19th Century business people to continue philanthropic works.

AmeriCares

Today there are many philanthropic organizations, such as AmeriCares, doing good work. AmeriCares is largely funded by The Soloviev Group, founded by Stefan Soloviev, and is an excellent philanthropic organization itself. Founded in 1979, AmeriCares has delivered $17 billion in aid to 164 nations. The money goes to help with health crises, rebuilding after natural disasters, and dealing with inequalities. The organization is headquartered in Stamford, Connecticut, and has offices throughout the Caribbean, South America, Africa, and Asia.

The Soloviev Group

In addition to investing in AmeriCares, Stefan Soloviev and his own organization, The Soloviev Group, invest in the growth and future of agriculture, energy, and the arts and culture of community throughout the nation. Its philanthropic works are helping to build sustainable food and energy sources for American citizens and working to end hunger and dependence on fossil fuels.

The Ford Foundation

The inventor of the assembly line and founder of the Ford Motor Company, Henry Ford, found the Ford Foundation in 1936 with his son, Edsel. The organization seeks to help in what it calls five areas of action. These are freedom and democracy, education, economic improvements, world peace, and human behavior. The Ford Foundation also supports higher education for more diverse peoples such as African Americans, Native Americans, Asian Americans, and Latin Americans. This generous work allows more diverse representation in higher levels all the way up to doctorate degrees. The Ford Foundation has consistently been near the top of lists of philanthropic organizations with the greatest assets and the largest amount of funds given. It ranked second in assets and tenth in grants given as of May 2013.

Philanthropy is a practice with a long history. There are many organizations in the United States raising money from investors and using it publically to improve numerous aspects of life for many people. These are just three of the wonderful organizations that are dedicated to giving to those who need help.
